The institution traces its origin to 1985, when Sri Ramasamy Memorial Engineering College (SRMEC) was established at Kattankulathur, Tamil Nadu, under the visionary leadership of Dr. T. R. Paarivendhar, Founder Chancellor. Over the years, SRM evolved from an engineering college into a comprehensive multidisciplinary institution. It subsequently attained deemed-to-be university status under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, and developed into SRM Institute of Science and Technology, offering a broad range of undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes. Today, SRMIST provides education across diverse disciplines including Engineering and Technology, Science and Humanities, Medicine and Health Sciences, Management, Law and Agricultural Sciences, along with other emerging and professional areas. Its flagship Kattankulathur campus, located near Chennai, has developed into a vibrant academic, research and innovation hub. SRMIST has expanded its presence through campuses at Kattankulathur, Ramapuram, Vadapalani, Tiruchirappalli, Modinagar, Sonepat, Amaravati and Gangtok, creating opportunities for students from across India and abroad.
